Sterling White Halibut is a Norwegian aquaculture company specialising in the farming and processing of halibut. Established by Mowi, the company grew rapidly in few years, evolving from a small operation into a scalable production business with increasing complexity across its value chain.

As production volumes increased, so did the need for better control over operations. Sterling quickly reached a point where their existing systems no longer supported the way the business actually worked. To support further growth, the company needed a cloud-based ERP system that could handle both production and logistics.

Outgrowing systems that couldn’t support production complexity

Like many companies in aquaculture, Sterling White Halibut operates in a production environment with strict requirements for traceability, logistics and quality control. Fish must be tracked from early life stages through growth, processing and delivery, all while maintaining full documentation and compliance.

As the company scaled, several challenges became apparent. The business had limited visibility across production and inventory, relied on fragmented systems and manual processes, and struggled to support further growth in a structured way. What had worked in an earlier phase was no longer fit for a more complex operation.

“We had outgrown our existing systems and needed something that could support how we actually operate. We needed a system that could handle both production and logistics, and scale with us as the business grew”, says Business Consultant at Sterling White Halibut, Per Magne Kjølleberg.

Building a scalable, cloud-based backbone

To support its continued growth, Sterling implemented RamBase, a cloud-based ERP platform, with Mazeppa advising on system selection and implementation.

“RamBase stood out as a standard, cloud-based solution built for scalability. It gave us the flexibility we needed, and proved to be a better fit than more specialised, industry-specific systems”, says Kjølleberg.

A key requirement was to establish a system that could handle both production and logistics in a unified way, while remaining flexible enough to adapt as the business evolves.

Equally important was the ability to integrate with specialised industry systems already in use. Sterling continues to rely on best-of-breed tools for monitoring fish throughout the production cycle, from early development stages to harvest.

By combining these systems with a robust ERP backbone, the company has established a more cohesive and future-ready digital setup.

From fragmented systems to a more integrated operation

By implementing a cloud-based ERP system, Sterling White Halibut now operates with a more connected system landscape. This enables the company to better manage production and logistics as it grows, maintain high standards for traceability and quality, and reduce reliance on manual processes.

Mazeppa CEO Aage Ramstad points out that Sterling White Halibut represents a growing group of aquaculture companies facing similar challenges:

“Many companies experience rapid growth and increasing complexity, while their systems no longer support the way they operate. For businesses with high demands for traceability, logistics and scalability, having the right digital backbone is essential for continued growth,” says Ramstad.
